Minuet 2 violin3/15/2023 ![]() ![]() It should fall to your side, a dead-weight. Take some deep breaths and try to release all of the tension in your right arm. Put your right arm in front of you in playing position. Try this exercise: put down the violin and bow. This is especially important for the right arm, since releasing tension will make the arm heavy, and the weight drives the stroke, making the bow sink into the string and producing a smooth, powerful tone. It takes practice, but you can eventually gain enough awareness of your body to release tension on command. You need to think about relaxing when you play, and make a conscious effort to release tension in your whole body. Both your left and right arms look very stiff. For example, if you have a slur 2 and you want it to be even, you should use half the bow per note. For slurs, divide the entire bow into fractions. Work on traveling more- more speed less pressure. For the most part you are staying in the upper middle, and only using a little bow. I think you should work on using more bow. Keep it up, you're doing really, really well! Ultimately, I think that relaxing will do great things for your tone. ![]() Let your wrist untense, unclench your jaw if it's clenched, and relax your shoulders. Now, it will for sure be difficult to actually try and do, but get that mental image. Try picturing your bow gliding across the strings, lightly and gently. Making the piece flow will take time and practice, but relaxing can help. Quick pieces are especially daunting when it comes to crossing gracefully, but practicing slowly will help with getting it clean and precise. It should also help a bit with string crossings. Then muscle memory will lead the way as you pick up the speed. If you give your fingers time to find the right notes slowly, you'll get it ingrained in your mind. You may have already been doing this, and that's great, but if you haven't, it can be extremely helpful. If you don't have one (I don't) you can get an app on your phone. Hey there! First I'd like to say, you're doing great. ![]()
